Innovators are MADE? Or BORN?

Today, I have come up with such an article which would probably make you think for a little while…

Do you think innovators are made or born?
One thing is for sure that everyone might think that “innovators are the talented and intelligent people who do not need to study and also, they need to be born with in order to be an innovator later in life”.

Caution…Read the following CAREFULLY!!!
According to the study conducted by the Economics Department of BankBoston, MIT or Massachusetts Institute of Technology is being an INSTRUMENT in generating NEW BUSINESSES NATIONWIDE. [1] Their objective is to provide high quality education with the strong emphasis on scientific and technological research. [2] Over the years the MIT has delivered many GRADUATES who have established multi-million dollar companies and contributed in various INNOVATIONS. Most of the MIT-related companies have a major presence in the San Francisco Bay Area (Silicon Valley). The 4000 MIT related companies employ 1.1 million people and have annual world sales of $232 billion. That is roughly equal to a gross domestic product of $116 billion, which is a little less than the GDP of South Africa and more than the GDP of Thailand. [3] MIT have enrolled such innovators as, William R. Hewlett who’s the founder of Hewlett-Packard Co, Kenneth H. Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Co, Robert N. Noyce of Intel Corp, William Emery Nickerson of Gillette Co and many others.
The bottom line of the abovementioned evidence is to prove that many of the BIG INNOVATORS ARE MADE, not BORN…
Would you agree with my statement? If you are not, please state your reasons.

Yes, I agree with you. Innovation is made by innovator and to made new innovation is not that easy like we implement in our life when we already receive that innovation.

I disagree with the statement innovators are made not born,In my opinion innovators are born and made at the same time , all of us are born into this world with our own unique capabilities of having different ideas and way of thought of thinking from our religion and culture respectively , and with all of this gradually in time if the skill or ability of an individual is able to harness then all of us could be the next potential of becoming the new Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison , Tsai lung , Confucius, Isaac Newton etc.

Hey bro, you have motivated me to think a bit!!! Let me give you my own idea, there are certain factors to make the person expert enough to come up with some thing new. (i) the context of the culture and the family back ground, (ii) the way of fostering and growing among the school mates, (iii) the friend and people through the society which he is communicating with, (iv) exposing with the people who are giving motivation to the person, (v) getting a chance of finding the right direction to find the right field to focus on. To me these are the main factors that may give the right direction to any body regardless on how much is his IQ. In my opinion the only factor is finding the direction, and then you are safe enough to get to the success. The same concept may be practiced among the inventors; I do believe that, those who got the chance to find the right direction; they defiantly come up with some thing original through their field of study. This could be the book for the author or the anti loss hair shampoo for the chemist.

Hey Murphy, Innovation and innovators is the hot topic to discuss about. Companies are in a battle to innovate new goods from innovators and be seen as innovative. But if we question either it’s born or not? Innovation is not a thing that can be purchased or installed like a computer system. And also same goes to innovators as well, they can’t be simply made, its all matter of time. Also innovators need to have some aim or purpose for the company concerned. But yet I am not telling that it’s born or made. So I will end up as telling that I don’t have any idea either its born or not better ask Allah... take care

Again here Dr. Shuky ...... take a look
Before going any further, it is important to define innovation. Innovation is not about coming up with clever ideas. Creativity is about coming up with the idea. Innovation is about applying the idea to obtain value. To be clear, innovation is the act of changing the established way of doing things, the ability to turn knowledge into value and link emerging technologies with emerging markets. Innovation is about bringing creative new ideas to life.
Within an organization, it is important to understand where and how to apply innovation to create true value. The first question that should be addressed is “What do you want to gain from innovation?” Surprisingly, this identification of a clear goal is often ignored. But without a goal, it is impossible to quantify the value realized from innovation. Some goals for an innovation program include enhancing brand and image and increasing shareholder wealth, return on investment and market share.
While innovation can be targeted, an innovation program should look strategically across all possible solution areas. Any strategy will need to be treated as a journey towards the overall objective. Each step of this journey will involve innovation in some combination of process, product and performance. This innovation will be, by its very nature, dynamic because the overall corporate strategy must deal with changing technology, competition, economic condition, demographic and cultural change and also meet the often complex requirements of governmental legislation.
How Can an Innovator to Innovate?
Having identified where to apply innovation, the next question is how to innovate? The first aspect of this is to determine if innovator has an innovative nature? To do this, consider how you stack up against the following six principles of innovation:
• Do you know what business you are in and what are you trying to achieve in the future?
• Do you understand where the value in your company comes from and can you articulate what you want to achieve through innovation?
• Can you concentrate on what you want to achieve or will you be distracted by day to day concerns?
• Can you find a way to complete innovations?
• Can the participants share the results of their innovation?
• Can you get innovation accepted in your company or organization?
Innovative organizations typically display several characteristics including: risk tolerance, focus on the future market, ability to ask why something is done a certain way and then develop a better way to do it if needed, and the understanding that innovation is a culture, not a one-off event.
As companies try to change innovation from an art to a science, the objective is not simply to apply the organization to the task of innovation, but to change the very nature of how the organization innovates. For example, many IT innovations of the last forty years consisted of mechanizing existing processes. Rather than improving the process, the focus was on making the process faster. Today's innovation is about asking whether this is the right process and if necessary, being able to change it entirely.
What Kind of people Innovate?
So, who is an innovator? Innovators are easy to describe, but difficult to find. Innovation teams mix together many disciplines and this requires the participation of people who are predisposed to interdisciplinary working. Often these people have degrees and experience in many different subjects, cultures and disciplines and have worked in different specializations.
The director of the innovation team needs to have a high level of skill and credibility within the innovation team and the corporate management chain. It is critical that the director be able to manage a team of highly-gifted, willful and articulate people, be able to speak to business and government agendas, and work with sponsors and stakeholders.
When looking for people to participate in innovation activities, it is vital to remember that innovators are made, not born. Many remarkable individuals contribute to the success of a company, from the design and development of the products to the proliferation of innovative human resources policies and practices. While many of their unique abilities undoubtedly are genetically encoded, it's clear that the company's culture not only makes these individual contributions possible, it must also enhance and nurture them, allowing people to achieve more as a team than they could as individuals.
Fundamentally, Innovation is about changing the behavior of a company from reactive to proactive.
The Innovation Process
Having looked at the how and the who, the next area to understand is the innovation process – essentially the process for the discovery and conversion of ideas to reality. In essence, the process of innovation is a rhythm of search and selection, analysis and synthesis, cycles of divergent thinking followed by convergence. This concept appears in many innovation processes to express design strategy for consumer-centric innovation.
Innovation is increasingly seen as important to gaining and maintaining a business advantage. However, innovation is easy to say, but hard to do right. It requires a significant investment of time, money and resources as well as access to world-class research partners. Achieving this requires a diverse sponsorship base and outstanding staff. Think of it as evolution in action.

I disagree with the statement that innovators are made not born. In my opinion, innovators are born and made at the same time. Today, a person may be creative or innovative, but that person can't really become a good innovators if he is not well trained. That's why i said, innovator is born and made at the same time.

Well, got to say both, inventors are both made and born. A person like Graham bell is a naturally born inventor. As said, neccesity is the mother of creation, some people invent because they are faced by a particular situation. The cell phone for example was invented by scandivian countries, which needed it to communicate among the dispersed exkimos. Note that factors like education, eperiences, and prestige are factors that push the minds of inventors.I believe there are many great unknown inventors out there, unknown because they don't have the opportunities to show case their talents. Maybe i'm one of them.....

I would agree that innovators are made throughout I certain time frame. However, we do have two sides of a story where people disagree with it. Some will say that innovators are made and some will say that innovators are born. Let us have a look at the book ‘The Eye of Innovation’. Referring to an example of developing and designing of THE most powerful computers, that “there was something about the nature, the culture of the company that not only made their individual contributions possible, it also enhance and nurtured then on a way impossible to any of these individuals working alone. Many of their abilities undoubtedly were genetically encoded, but Control Data enable their expression. Even more interesting than the stories of these people themselves is the impact their innovations had on others.” (http://books.google.com.my/books?id=Ua7W1bbmQtwC&pg=PA6&lpg=PA6&dq=Are+innovators+made+or+born%3F&source=web&ots=V_eYNMCnHB&sig=PxCgeHbmrH8bvZDK-zjeq8p2se8&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result). This book tells us how innovators are made by influence or organisation’s culture.

I’m agreeing with Eric..! The best innovators born and made it can’t be any one. Because when you born with a talent you have to learn to impress your talent. When you born with the talent you won’t take long time to learn. There so many people who born with talent and they learn fast and now they are the big leaders.

well, my friend am going to go for both innovators can either be made or born.

Thousand of years back where by there was no education and facilities to use. I will say that at that time some people were born with this creative mind and so they started to invent and create simple things such as simple music instruments and any other thing you can think off.

Nowadays even thought theere still some people who are born with creative minds but on their on with the technology today they will get no where. So they are made and they learn implement more faster than others and so they are the ones who come out with amazing inventions.

Humans are all somewhat capable of becoming great innovators. That is to say figuring out a way to do something once they intend to do it. Every person is born with this innovative spirit, sure some more than others, I am certain I got some innovator genes along the way. But even if you did not get an extra dose of innovator genes with a little work you can become a world-class innovator too.
We all agree that genetically speaking there is virtually no percentage difference between Sir Isaac Newton and you. You can train yourself to think like him and other great men in history if you choose to and feel that is indeed your calling; you can become anything that you want to; it is not that difficult at all.
Anyone with practice can become a great innovator and we become what we think about most. If you wish to become an innovator all you need to do is to commit yourself to think. Do not allow your thoughts to be troubled by societal norms or political correctness. Look outside in every aspect of life and consider all the problems and potential solutions and all the ramification of each of these solutions and possible ways to over come those.
You can think of it like a chessboard; make a move in your mind and then counter that move from every possible direction with every possible dilemma and determine how to overcome and adapt to each situation, eventually you will find you can make fewer moves faster in problem solving.

I would agree with you that Big innovators are made not born.People are born with their own capabilities and ability to have different ideas and thoughts from the teaching of our religion and family background as well as culture. But to be an Innovator,we need to combine our own capabilities and the thought that we gain in the world. As Anuar said that innovators are born and made at the same time. That's what I mean by innovators are made.People can't be an Innovator just by gaining knowledge in the world only.Everyone have their specialty that gave by God and can be an innovator.Other than that, there are some people who misused that capabilities given and bring harmful to the world for their own benefits.

I agree that one inventor might be born with his creation. As a human being God give us brain and some of us using it that’s why they become inventor or business man etc no body learned from his or her mother stomach.
I think that every one should have the potential to do something but we are not using our talent in right way. We are using but wrong way. If we use our talent in right may be we will achieve something special in our future.
Any way Murphy bro keep it up inshallah you will achieve something in your future which might be help you to be famous.
