The Innovator's Dilemma: Could Microsoft's Windows Be Disrupted?

More than a decade after IBM’s OS/2 lost the corporate desktop wars to Windows, Big Blue is back. And this time, IBM is armed with Canonical’s Ubuntu Linux and a $49 per-user price point. A new, virtualized Ubuntu-driven solution initially targets IBM’s financial services and government customers. Here are the details:

According to a press release, IBM, Virtual Bridges and Canonical have released “a Linux-desktop solution designed to drive significant savings compared with Microsoft-desktop software by amplifying Lotus collaboration software and Ubuntu to a larger user base through virtualization.” Translation: IBM is DECLARING WAR on "Windows AND Microsoft Office". And this time, Big Blue should be taken seriously. [1]

According to the IBM release:
“This solution runs open standards-based email, word processing, spreadsheets, unified communication, social networking and other software to any laptop, browser, or mobile device from a virtual desktop login on a Linux-based server configuration.
A virtual desktop looks like a traditional desktop but is not limited to a single physical computer. Instead, many virtual Linux desktops are hosted on a server. [2]

NO..., this won’t kill Microsoft. But the IBM move with an assist from Canonical and Virtual Bridges is a big-time attack on Windows and Office. It could inspire more vendors and customers to breakaway from Microsoft.
If Windows ends up being less important over time as applications become more OS agnostic where will Microsoft make its money? If Microsoft will be able to take its awesome reservoir of talent and free that talent from the constraints of its business model, then perhaps it can be the next example of a company that turned the forces of disruption to its advantage.[3]

So what do you think about the future of Windows and Microsoft Office? Will disruption play out in a way that "FAVORS" or "KILLS" the incumbent market leader?

Innovations cause Laziness

The reason why I came up with this topic is because it became very apparent to me the one day when I was sleeping.
Before going to bed, I turned on my air conditioner (AC) and set the temperature to minimum and slept. Later, I woke up and my whole body was shaking. I realized that room has cooled down to extend where I was freezing cold. I turned left, turned right trying to find remote control, but unfortunately I could not find it. And guess what, I did not stand up to switch the AC off; instead, I grabbed the folded blanked under my feet, pull it way over my head, wrapped myself with it and continue sleeping… hmmm....This is the sign of laziness.

The innovations like televisions, internet, remote control, calculator, microwave, hair gel, telephones, and so forth are actually making us lazy and addicted. People are becoming extremely dependent on them. Personally, I think the more we use these so called “innovative products” the lazier we get. So do you think that we are LAZY BECAUSE we are the VICTIMS of INNOVATIONS??? Please state your reasons…

Innovators are MADE? Or BORN?

Today, I have come up with such an article which would probably make you think for a little while…

Do you think innovators are made or born?
One thing is for sure that everyone might think that “innovators are the talented and intelligent people who do not need to study and also, they need to be born with in order to be an innovator later in life”.

Caution…Read the following CAREFULLY!!!
According to the study conducted by the Economics Department of BankBoston, MIT or Massachusetts Institute of Technology is being an INSTRUMENT in generating NEW BUSINESSES NATIONWIDE. [1] Their objective is to provide high quality education with the strong emphasis on scientific and technological research. [2] Over the years the MIT has delivered many GRADUATES who have established multi-million dollar companies and contributed in various INNOVATIONS. Most of the MIT-related companies have a major presence in the San Francisco Bay Area (Silicon Valley). The 4000 MIT related companies employ 1.1 million people and have annual world sales of $232 billion. That is roughly equal to a gross domestic product of $116 billion, which is a little less than the GDP of South Africa and more than the GDP of Thailand. [3] MIT have enrolled such innovators as, William R. Hewlett who’s the founder of Hewlett-Packard Co, Kenneth H. Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Co, Robert N. Noyce of Intel Corp, William Emery Nickerson of Gillette Co and many others.
The bottom line of the abovementioned evidence is to prove that many of the BIG INNOVATORS ARE MADE, not BORN…
Would you agree with my statement? If you are not, please state your reasons.

Latest Innovations...(0_0)

What is Innovation???

As outlined by Smith (2006, page 6) an innovative idea does not necessary need to be a brand new invention, an innovative idea can be how you adapt or use an invention to make your business better; “innovation involves exploiting inventions so that they can be traded in our market place… innovation is about bringing inventions out of the workshops and getting them ready for the market. Only when something new is available to consumers in the market or is being produced in a new way, has innovation occurred.”

Smith, D. (2006) Exploring Innovation, McGraw-Hill, Maidenhead, Berkshire

Why to Innovate???
Firms in the 20th century are always on the process to research and develop, to add value to the products and services that they offer to their customers, so as to CREATE sufficient COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE to allow them to stay in the relevant industries.

Innovation is indeed one of the most challenging aspects of evolution. It is mammoth and diverse. Companies like Google, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart, GE, McDonalds and Apple Inc are some of them...To make the topic more interesting!!!I would like you guys to Give Examples Of Companies And Their Most Recent Innovations!!!

Apple: Innovation Creates Competitive Edge

Recently, I have read an interesting article in daily newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" posted by Yukari Iwatani Kane. According to him Apple Inc. reported a 26% increase in its quarterly profit, besides that, the demand for Apple's premium products have been largly unaffected by the souring economy. Its revenue rose mainly benefited from solid Macintosh computer sales, iPhone and a new iPod Nano.

And here comes a question: do you thing innovativeness of Apple Inc. have brought about competitive edge and made the company unbeatable?
